The meaning of the term Chhatrapati is a royal title. It was was first used by marathas which is equivalent to emperor. It is compound of 2 words Chhatra which “Umbrella” and Pati which means “ruler”. This terms was the symbol of kingship used by monarchies outside India too. This title signifies that the person is the supreme ruler among other princes.
This title was first introduced to Shivaji Bhosale.
